Antonia~ Books to bring you joy this World Mental Health Day

“World Mental Health Day (10 Oct) is a day to talk about mental health and show everyone that mental health matters. It’s also a day to let people know that it’s okay to ask for help, no matter what you’re going through.”

Since we opened the shop, we have regularly been asked for books that help different aspects of someone’s mental health. Some of our requests are simple, such as “can you recommend an uplifting book.” Others have stayed with me, such as my request a few years ago from a mother who asked for “a good book which can help to distract my suicidal daughter from the world.”

This last year has tested my own mental health, with family members going through chemotherapy and my recent miscarriage. So as today is World Mental Health Day I thought I would share a collection of books that I have turned to this last year that have either sparked joy or been that perfect distraction for when the world turns dark.

What You Are Looking for is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama

This book I have described to our customers as the only uplifting fiction read I have read this year. I was recommended this by an incredible regular customer who smiled as she described the beautiful stories of these individuals and how a book changed their lives for the better. With the core value of enrichment, this book follows five individuals from different walks of life on their way to navigating life’s problems. From retirement to career slump to new adventures this book has aspects I feel every reader would be able to relate. With witty commentary and a general love of reading and crafts, this beautiful translation is one that I will highly recommend for those who wish to smile.

The Joy of Small Things by Hannah Jane Parkinson

If you are a regular in our shop you may have heard me mention this sunshine yellow beauty! I initially was intrigued by the premise of J B Priestly’s work delight however I will not lie… the sausage dog on the cover ensures its purchase (something every sausage dog owner can relate to is we are always drawn in by dog décor).

I turned to this book in January 2023, sometime after its publication, as in the midst of the winter blues I needed something to make the New Year feel less bleak. Every aspect of this book will leave you smiling and when you feel at your most dark this book will remind you that there is plenty around you that can spark joy. Dogs in the park, fresh bedding, a cup of tea! This book will slow you down and have you looking around yourself at everything there is to be grateful for.

The Poetry Pharmacy Forever : New Prescriptions to Soothe, Revive and Inspire by William Sieghart

I originally came across Sieghart’s work in lockdown 2020, and all three collections I have found to be perfect when you need to address your feelings. The latest collection I find the most uplifting as these poems provide hope and comfort when you need it most. Small enough to fit in your pocket and a built-in ribbon bookmark you can keep it close for when you need it most. Additionally, the covers are beautiful cloth so they feel nice when you are holding them to read- not necessarily important but I do feel this makes for a more enjoyable experience, especially when I feel sad.

We are always happy to help recommend a book, whether you need joy or a book on a specific aspect of life. You can get in touch through our request page or call us on 01727807248. Books can be the greatest companions and support in times of need, whether you need a laugh or information they can be the greatest comfort.

Two quotes I wish to leave you with:

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart…I’ll always be with you.” ~ Carter Crocker, Disney's Pooh's Grand Adventure The Search for Christopher Robin

“You'll never be alone if you’ve got a book.”

― Al Pacino

Take care this World Mental Health Day
