Elizabeth reviews~ The House at the Edge of Magic by Amy Sparkes
This is a witty and cleverly produced book, a real page turner which captivates the reader from the very first page.
You are introduced to a young orphan girl called Nine who happens to be a pickpocket as this ensures lodgings otherwise known as the Nest with a man called Pockets who is not so friendly. On one of her pickpocketing outings, she acquires an ornament in the shape of a house. By knocking on the ornament’s door, the ornament transforms into a very odd-looking house and as you step further inside the realms of this book you quickly realise it is very odd on the inside too!
This house turns out to be full of quirky characters and perhaps more alarmingly… cursed. The undercurrent of humour throughout the book is bound to place a smile on the readers face. The intriguing characters in this book also include a witch, a wizard called Flabberghast, one Dr Spoon and a troll called Eric who happens to be very kind-hearted and a vegetarian, much to the relief of Nine.
With the promise of wealth which equates to a better life and more importantly freedom Nine embarks on a mission to rid the house of a terrible curse a witch had placed on it. In order to aid her rather interesting companions she must play to her strengths and part with her most treasured and only possession, a music box. I particularly enjoyed the descriptive nature of this book and the stories prologue and epilogue as it seamlessly ties this wonderful tale together.
Will Nine be able to break this time-pressured curse? In addition, what will Nine learn about herself during this remarkable and magical tale?
