Volunteering with Books On The Hill

Here at Books On The Hill, we believe that books can not only inspire and provide a safe haven for those in need of escapism. To create this we rely on the work of staff and volunteers to help us to provide a wide range of events for our community. With author talks, children’s story time, writing workshops, book clubs and exciting new projects there is a lot to get involved in.

As well as a reference (this can be from a previous employer for paid or voluntary work).

Weekend Book Assistant

A few positions have become available for a volunteer Weekend Book Assistant. This position would take place on either Saturday or Sunday of your choosing with shifts taking place between the hours of 11 am to 4 pm where you will work alongside our book researchers/ booksellers in looking after our collection and helping customers with book related queries.

The role would include~

  • Helping customers with book queries (such as “where can I find your history section?")

  • Researching books using a variety of methods- training provided

  • Pricing vintage/antiquarian books

  • Helping to create social media images/ or text for posts of exciting discoveries

  • Typing up information cards for our collection of new and old books

What we expect from you in the role:

  • Deliver good customer service

  • Help to maintain a clean & tidy workspace.

  • Good timekeeping.

  • Follow all health & safety guidelines at all times.

Children’s storyteller

We have a few positions available for a volunteer children’s storyteller. The role would be for Tuesday and/or Saturday Mornings between 10:00am to 12pm.

The role would include~

  • Reading snippets from a variety of books (fiction, non-fiction, and poetry).

  • Engaging children with literature (reading and talking to them about the books chosen for that session).

  • Choosing books to read each session and ensuring we have copies available for purchase.

School Project Assistant

We have an exciting opportunity for a volunteer position helping our book researchers with our new ‘School Wish List’ project. This position would be for 4 hours a week where you would work alongside one of our book researchers to help ensure the success of our school project.

The role would include~

  • Curating essential books for our school wish list using a variety of research methods.

  • Liaising with local schools- helping to explain how the project works and tailoring it to individual school needs.

  • Helping with school orders- packing and sorting to ensure all books are delivered efficiently (you will not be responsible for delivering the books just sorting in-store).

Book Research Assistant

We have lots of incredible vintage and antiquarian books waiting to be put on our shelves, but before they make their way to the front of the shop we have to research each book to see its worth. This task is an incredible journey into history, discovering unknown authors or incredible classics. This position would be one day a week where you will work alongside our book researchers/ booksellers in their research of our collection.

The role would include~

  • Researching books using a variety of methods

  • Pricing vintage/antiquarian books

  • Helping to create social media images/ or text for posts of exciting discoveries

  • Typing up information cards for rare finds

What we expect from you in the role:
