Lest We Forget by Elizabeth
The date November 11th, 1918 marks the day World War I was brought to a close.
It is commonly known as Armistice Day and as Remembrance Day.
Every year, in memory of those who have fought for our rights and lives, we mark November 11th and commemorate all those who lost their lives.
It is vital to ensure their memory lives on and this blog contains several book recommendations for older children, aged 9+, that I feel act as a resource and poignant reminder of the sacrifices endured and enable children to step into the shoes of the past.
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo
This timeless tale is powerful and will captivate the young reader as they meet Joey, a horse, who narrates and showcases immense fortitude in the face of danger. It is also a tale of friendship that endures all hardship. This work has also been transported into the realm of film and theatre. Suitable for ages 9+.
Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian
This endearing tale is set in World War II. Willie Beech is an evacuated child who comes from a broken family. Under the care of Tom Oakley, Willie can thrive. This story demonstrates the power of love in the face of adversity. I remember reading this book as a child and it provided me with the means of visualising what life was like at the time of World War II. Suitable for ages 9+.
Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden
This classic is also set in World War II and follows the tale of two siblings Carrie and Nick who have been evacuated from London to Wales for their safety. The author has delved into her own experience living in Wales as an evacuee to bring this tale to life. Suitable for ages 9+.
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne
This recounts the story of Bruno who forms a beautiful friendship with a child named Shmuel who lives beyond a fence with people who wear striped pyjamas. This tale sheds light on the atrocities of the Holocaust. Suitable for ages 9+.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: 2 by C.S. Lewis
This beautiful tale is the second book in the Chronicles of Narnia series. This book is initially set in World War II and it follows the story of Lucy, Susan, Edmund, and Peter Pevensie who are evacuated into the countryside. This tale provides a source of escapism and provides the reader with a real sense of good vs evil as Lucy uncovers a magical realm called Narnia filled with adventure and bold characters. Suitable for ages 9+.
I believe it is important to share these recommendations to ensure children are provided with a deeper insight into the history endured not so long ago.
