That Sage old thought “What to read next" ~ Jane

You read Harry Potter and thought there'd never again be anything like it. Well, yes, you could be right but can I suggest now may be the moment through the pages of Douglas Adam's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy you meet Arthur Dent.

Who is Arthur? Like Harry someone a little 'different'.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy originated as a clever science fiction Radio 4 comedy series in 1978. Immediately it took the Nation by storm. Young and old were obsessed. It became a pop-culture classic overnight and so it's remained. Once hooked, you're hooked. Luckily there are five volumes

In the beginning it's a normal Thursday morning when Arthur's house along with the Earth are demolished to make way for an intergalactic hyperspace express route. Whilst Arthur's protesting, his friend Ford Prefect arrives confessing to not being earthly but an alien. These events somewhat change the course of Arthur's life and together the friends venture forth. The characters are so imaginatively described. I love the galactic police and two rather clever mice called Benjy and Frankie who offer to buy Arthur's brain in order to gain access to the Question printed on it. They already have the Answer.

The books are fun, challenging and I would say for anyone over the age of twelve, Spot On.

The volumes have recently been re-jacketed but I don't think they've ever been out of print which in its self makes them worthy.

The titles are: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy/The Restaurant at the End of the World/ Life, the Universe and Everything/ So Long and thanks for all the Fish/Mostly Harmless. There's also The Complete Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Boxset which could make a delightful gift for a teenager hovering between children's and adult fiction.
