Creative writing at Books On The Hill- Essential skills

  • Books on the Hill 1 Holywell Hill St Albans, England, AL1 1ER United Kingdom (map)

About this event

If you have the urge to write, this is an opportunity to develop your essential skills. In the creative and inspiring atmosphere of Books on the Hill’s reading room, you will learn about the most fundamental techniques of writing. In these well-structured sessions, tutor, Clare Hobba, will also provide inspirational prompts and starting points to launch you on your own writing journey. There will be the opportunity to share and review one another’s writing in class.

The course will take place over four sessions which will last 2 hours each, taking place on Wednesday mornings from 10am to 12pm. The first session will take place on the 27th April and will continue weekly until our last session taking place on 18th May 2022**.

Book your place here.

The shape of each session will be:

· Cover this week’s topic – handouts, discussions, exercises

· Writing exercise based on this week’s topic

· Read writing aloud – positive review of one another’s work, moderated by CFH

The week course structure~

1) Who is telling this story? Through whose eyes is the story being told? This choice of point-of-view is the first a writer must make. We examine the different possibilities and try some out.

2) How does the story come to life? The idea of ‘Show not Tell’ is fundamental to Creative Writing and in this session we look at some examples and find out how to apply them to our own writing.

3) Who are the characters? Creating rounded characters can be very fulfilling. We meet some techniques and choose ones that will work for us.

4) Where does the story happen? A strong sense of place is essential to a memorable story. We consider sources of inspiration and how to convey the atmosphere of physical surroundings.
