Elizabeth Recommends~ Five classics that are perfect to read when you turn 10 years old
Classic books are timeless treasured pieces of your lifelong relationship to reading. They have a spellbinding quality to them and are set to inspire and unlock your own imagination. I have clear memories of opening and reopening several treasured classics as a child. In fact, I have kept many wonderful books from my childhood as they provide me with a sense of comfort and the stories never fail to captivate my attention.
Here are my top five Classic recommendations for children aged 10. I hope they bring a source of delight and comfort to future young readers:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: 2 by C.S. Lewis
This book is part of a series called the Chronicles of Narnia and is a firm favourite of mine. What I particularly admire about this book is the strong moral compass it contains throughout as well as its magical properties. The story in my mind begins when by chance a game of hide and seek leads the youngest of four evacuated siblings, Lucy Pevensie, on a remarkable discovery in a seemingly unremarkable location… the wardrobe.
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Meet Anne, a rather insightful and inquisitive child who takes the young reader into her world of self-discovery and friendships. As a child I found this book to be a real page turner, the way in which Anne speaks really inspired my own outlook on the world. It really is full of endearing quotes that I believe children will continue to enjoy in generations to come.
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
This book is an intricate web of love and friendship between a young girl called Fern, Charlotte A. Cavatica the Spider and Wilbur the pig. For children who love animals I believe this is the perfect book to read.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
A heart-warming family tale which is perfect for the upcoming winter months. Follow the footsteps of four very different sisters and their adventures. The tale itself intriguingly interlinks with the authors own upbringing and is filled with moral values.
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
For children who love an adventure and pirates. This book which was first published in the nineteenth century is set to grasp the young readers attention from the offset. It centres on a plot to find buried treasure and narrated by Jim Hawkins. In this thrilling tale be prepared to meet bold characters including a rather cunning Long John Silver who quite fancies the treasure for himself.
