Mouse on the Hill~ Children's recommendations
Hello there, if you haven’t heard from me already, I am the mouse on the hill. I live the extraordinary life of a mouse in a bookshop. I do love my home and especially books to read, and on the odd occasion...nibble, I feel it gives the book more character, but best not concern yourself with that. Books what wonderful things they truly are. So much fun to read, informative, comforting and very personal. I like cheese, yes, I like cheese as much as the next mouse, what I don’t like is loneliness. It has been lonely this year. The shop, closed and cold. Just me and the books. Very sad. But great news, the shop has re-opened! This means I can share this cosy warm place, and the books of course with you all again. Everyone is welcome, except cats, and foxes and any other creature that might think me a tasty snack. The children’s section is looking rather lively these days. They do make a mess...and it is a mouse’s dream. That is what the children’s area is for me. Each book is so beautifully crafted and takes you into all sorts of new exciting worlds and stories to explore. Relatable, escapism and educational. What more could a mouse and child need?
You have the brilliant Captain Sir Tom Moore One Hundred Steps which is Illustrated by Adam Larkum. Triumph and optimism at its best!!!
The incredibly exciting Pierre The Maze Detective books by Hiro Kamigaki. I put on my hat, stretch out my whiskers and find my magnifying glass; the hunt proceeds through these extraordinary beautiful landscapes from Paris to New York!!!
Where Snow Angels Go by Maggie O’Farrel and illustrated by Daniela Jaglenka Terrazzini. Stunningly illustrated and magically told!!
Also the classics too…
The Faiytales have been revolutionised, Cinderella and co have had a remix and been revived, wacky artwork and bright. You can’t beat the shop beautiful versions of Wind in the Willows or Old Padders in How to be More Paddington by Michael Bond.
Not forgetting…
The Tiger Tiger Burning Bright poetry which includes a signed limited-edition print. This is one of my favourite books in the shop. It has amazing art and the poetry is perfect for not only children but the child in all of us. You must be quick though we only have a few of these editions left.
And my cousin, Winston, who is the main character in Alex T Smith’s How Winston Delivered Christmas. It is such a lovely tale and a remarkable journey he went on to deliver a letter to Father Christmas. It just shows we are all doing our bit this year.
Looking forward to seeing you throughout the festive season. Of course, I doubt you will see me. They’ve drawn me in gold on a bookcase. That will probably be the closest you will get to see how good looking I am. I’m selective in who I present myself too. There are too many books to read, too many gifts for Christmas to admire...or to nibble. Jingle jingle for now. I cannot wait to see you all back in the shop soon.
