Jane Reviews~ The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
A celebration of courage and love- the Nightingale tells the story of two Sisters separated by Family rifts, ideals, passion and circumstance. Each Sister embarking on her own dangerous path towards survival and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France.
In the quiet French village of Carriveau Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her Husband Antoine as he heads for the WW11 Front. She doesn't believe the Nazis will invade France but soon her own rural idol is invaded in a very personal way and so her story begins. Her eighteen year old Sister Isabelle takes a very different course which fuels her youthful, rebellious nature in Underground Paris and beyond.
This is a heartbreakingly beautiful novel. It has a hint of Zola he could so well have followed these two Sisters in much the same way. It has his tragedy and his passion.
The character of Isabelle, The Nightingale, whilst fictional is based on the true story of Andree de Jongh a twenty-four year old Belgian woman who navigated aviators and other escapees to walk across mountainous terrain to freedom.
Kristin Hannah says sometimes a story sneaks up on you, hits hard and dares you to look away. That was the case with The Nightingale. It had to be written.
In the Bookshop we endeavour to find the right book for the right person. That's our purpose but one day a Customer I recommend books to quite regularly came in and suggested this could be the right book for me. A lovely thought in two respects. Through 'chatting' books we've come to know each other's tastes and that we swap ideas as friends. Thank you.
